Defining the Need
1. A few hundred millionaires now own as much wealth as the world’s poorest 2.5
billion people.
2. The slice of the ‘economic cake’ taken by the richest 1% is the same size as
that handed to the poorest 57%.
3. Water problems effect half of humanity: some 1.1 billion people in developing
countries have inadequate access to water, and 2.6 billion lack basic sanitation
4. An estimated 44% of Indiana’s
renters do not earn enough to afford a two-bedroom apartment at fair market
rent.
5. During the last 5 years, children living in the Midwest experienced the
greatest increases in child poverty than any other region in the U.S.,
accounting for 43% of the total rise of child poverty.
6. 60% of children in low-income families in Indiana have at least one parent
who is employed full-time year-round.
7. Indiana has the highest percentage of high school dropouts in the nation
8. Muncie Community Schools ranks 8th in the state for highest number of
families below poverty, and 4th in the state for highest number of single parent
families
9. 24% of the Muncie population has fallen below the poverty line during the
past year, compared to the state average of 12%.
